Baptism

St J Font

Congratulations! The arrival of a new baby is a wonderful event. It is a time of joy, thanksgiving and celebration.

Soon you hope to be sharing in another wonderful event - your baby's Baptism. This, like the birth of your child, has to be prepared for.

Baptism, or Christening, is the sacrament by which we are born again of water and the Holy Spirit, and by which we are received into a new and spiritual life and become the Children of God.

What do I need to do?

Before having your baby baptised, you should be attending Mass regularly in our parish. Having your baby Baptised is an important step and it needs to be thought about carefully. You, as parents, are undertaking to bring up your child to know and practise their faith and the faith of the Church.  It is vitally important that you attend Mass in order to be able to do this.

The first step is pick up a Baptism Application Form from the Church, or ask at the Church Shop.

Baptisms usually take place once a month on the second Sunday of the month (not during Lent) at St Joseph's Church .  Please check with the parish office first to make sure that your preferred date is available before making any firm arrangements with family and friends.

The first stage in the cycle is to attend a Baptism Preparation Class.  Then, on the first Sunday of the month, come along as a family to the Mass that you would normally attend for your chld to be anointed in preparation for the Sacrament of Baptism.  The Baptism itself will then take place on the second Sunday of that month at St Joseph's Church.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for Baptism; an offering is left to your discretion.
