FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
The programme takes the form of Childrens sessions which are held on Saturday afternoons at St Joseph's Church. We follow the 'I Belong' programme and each child receives their very own workbook which they are encouraged to complete at home between sessions. The most important part of a child’s preparation is coming to Mass and no amount of teaching can replace this experience, so we hope to see you and your child at Mass often.
As well as Childrens sessions, there are a number of Parents Meetings where we explain the programme and what what we will be working on with your children. We hope in this way that you will be able to help your child if needed, and can talk to your child about their preparation. Although we hope to encourage your children, you, as parents, have a much bigger influence than we do.
There is very good support support from the parish with a team of catechists and other regular helpers during the childrens sessions. Any of the catechists or helpers will be pleased to answer your questions. If your child is at a Catholic school there should be help at hand there also.
TO ALL PARENTS: If you decide to enrol your child on the First Holy Communion Programme, it is of vital importance that you, as Parents, fully support your child throughout the whole programme. You can do this by: ensuring that your child attends every class, and to make time to talk through with them what they have learnt; ensuring that you attend all parents meetings to keep up to date with what's happening on the programme; attending Mass regularly as a family.
As you were told when your child was baptised, YOU are seen as the first teachers of the faith. During the classes, we can only build upon what you do at home; YOU are the role models for your child.
