  Moyo Babies' Home: Uganda

Our Lenten Project for 2009Moyo Happy Children
The Home, which was established in 1948, is home for  67 babies and young children up to the age of six.  They are either orphans or their families are extremely deprived and can no longer look after them.

Over the last 20 years Northern Uganda suffered dreadfully at the hands of a rebel group, the Lord’s Resistance Army, forcing families to move from their homes into camps so that they could be better protected from brutal attack.  At the same time there was a vicious civil war going on in neighbouring Southern Sudan, so thousands of Sudanese people flooded into Northern Uganda.  Both conflicts are now over, but there are still some Sudanese in the area, while some Ugandans have not yet returned to their home villages.
Both conflicts created many orphans.Moyo Devoted Care AssistantsThe Home is the only one of its kind for miles around, because looking after such young children is hugely labour-intensive and therefore expensive.

The Home is run by the Sacred Heart Sisters together with their loyal group of lay Care Assistants.
They are all completely devoted to the children.

International Refugee Trust has been funding the home since 2001 and has ensured that the Sisters have enough money to take wonderful care of the children.  However, the living quarters of the Care Assistants are not so wonderful  - in fact they are a downright disgrace and it is IRT’s aim to raise the £30,000 needed to rebuild their accommodation.

For our Lenten project in 2009, we set a target of raising £2500 to meet the costs of a shower/toilet block within
the Care ssistants` accommodation.
We are absolutely delighted to say that we achieved that target of £2500 and exceeded too, raising a total of
£4327!
Thank you to everyone who gave whatever they could afford towards this wonderful and worthwhile cause.
